Been away on holiday in Spain, so busy catching up on backlog of items/emails etc. I heard about this from a contact at the BBC a few weeks ago, but want to check it out before making this post.

It seems that Age Concern (AC) has teamed up with a number of sponsors to promote IT learning to UK 'Seniors' this week. The BBC story explains (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5004584.stm) some of the background.

The AC Silver Surfers website http://www.silversurfer.org.uk/index.html explains more details of this weeks events.

I am sure that all of us would be very interested to here from anyone that attends/uses and of the event on offer. I had tried to get some pre-launch info from AC, but they seemed not to want to respond to my emails.

Anyway, lets see what people say about it.

Adding sound to a website

I have a puzzle in trying to add a sound file to my website.

I have produced an MP3 version of an audio-tape and I have an extract (146kb) filed on the (duplicate) website on my home computer, which plays on clicking the image link, via RealPlayer. However, when I uploaded the new file to the host website I can get no noise response; a page appears with the message "Clip info (No information available); It suggests to me that I may have to include clips or links to plugs to make the sound operative:so far I have not found the answer.

Has anyone a suggestion, please?

Later the same afternoon. I should of course have done more research before I entered this request for help. Rather than delete it, someone else may be glad of my own answer, even though it is not yet fully complete. In one of the internet pages I sought guidance from, I came across an in-passing comment that many hosts banned mp3 files because of the way they could misuse copyright. I have queried my own host to see whether they have that policy, and am waiting for a reply. In the meantime I have been trying out the possibility for myself. Changing mp3 to wav format allows the website to play the sound: not as elegantly, unfortunately, because it throws up a page blank except for the display of the status of the player. On the home duplicate site, on the other hand, I am only allowed to hear the sound when I click through the options of the security restriction that my computer is imposing. I have no doubt I can find a control option to get round that, though it isn`t much of a bother. I may try other formats to see what happens with AIFF or Ogg Vorbis; but I shall wait more patiently now for my host answer, knowing that at least I have uncovered the cause of the original problem. So no need for replies here. Incidentally, in case anyone is still reading, another difficulty I solved in a similarly accidental way when I was trying to play a CD of this same origin on my CD player was that the CD player would not accept RWs - which I was using because it was all experimental and I was too mean to use a non-rewritable one to start with.

'AOL Media Player'

Does anyone have any suggestions to offer to a fellow member who emailed me direct with the following problem. I do not use AOL so can't answer from my experience.

"I have a query, when I try to view a video file in 'AOL Media Player',
I see a message that states 'Network error' The file could not be played.....

At the time I am on the net."

Further to the recent Feature/Article on Spyware.

It's always a good idea to know what's on your PC.

BeLarc Advisor is free piece of software that when installed on your PC, performs a scan of the contents and comes up with a very easy to read report.

This report lists hardware (disc info, RAM size, PC Serial numbers etc.) fitted on your PC and software components (Fixes installed, Software installed-including Keys) installed (you'll be staggered just what's on your PC).

It's a handy utility to run every so often to find out what's on your PC.

Open Office - A Microsoft Office replacement?

A number of comments have come in about using Open Office as a replacement for Microsoft Office.

Do any Forum users have this software? Does it really present a viable alternative to the Microsoft products?

If you have not come across this product before, you can find out some background information, before downloading a copy.

If you don't have a Broadband connection, then you can probably find a copy on one of the monthly PC magazines CD's/DVD's.

Hello from a new member

Just thought I would stop by and say hello from a very wet South Dorset.

Just to introduce myself I have just turned 60 ( so I guess I qualify to use the forum ), I have been interested in computers since I built my first one from a kit of parts back in the 80s.

Ive worked as a Network administrator for 6 years, a computer engineer for 10 years, and am now semi retired. I can break/fix most makes of computers and have a wide range of experience built up by doing it the hard way.

I shall pop by now and again and see if I can help anyone, but dont expect miracles.

As the network administrator our motto was The impossible we do at once, miracles can take a few days

Good luck to the new venture and lets hope for many new members.
